Social media, cell phones; the rise of the ‘sleep deprived teen’ of today

Date:

Teen issues are becoming a global point of discussion. With the advent of technology at their fingertips, awareness through social media and distractions that are far too many; the teen of today is under tremendous pressure.

The latest that is bothering parents around the world is related to sleep problems in teens. It is fast becoming a global stress point and reports suggest that the number of kids battling with this issue is increasing by the day.

So, what are some of the reasons for this phenomenon to occur.

The University of Michigan conducted a detailed study around this topic and came up with a few pertinent observations. Some reasons cited by them are –

Social Media – a gamechanger
According to the study, more than half of the parents of sleep-deprived teens blame social media for this.
The University of Michigan’s report suggests that fifty six percent of parents of teenagers who have sleep troubles believe the use of electronics is hurting their child’s shut-eye.
Forty-three percent of parents report that their teens struggle to fall asleep and wake up. These kids also experience quick breaks in their sleep and are not able to get back to rest once up. This was a finding that came out as a part of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health at the University of Michigan.
Parents also felt that occasional sleep problems (one to two nights per week) was a constant issue with their children. Eighteen percent of the respondents, however, believed that their teen could struggle with sleep even on more nights per week.
Growing dependence on electronics, especially cell phones and social media sites, was a huge deterrent in the sleep pattern of teens.

Pressure of school, homework
Other glaring reasons include –
Irregular sleep schedules due to homework or activities (43 percent)
Pressure of school (31 percent)
Concerns about social life (23 percent).

Health conditions
Ten percent of the respondents also felt that the sleep problems could be related to a medical or health condition which the child could be suffering from.

“This poll suggests that sleep problems are common among teens and parents believe late-night use of electronics are a main contributor,” said poll co-director Sarah Clark.
“Teens’ hectic schedules and homework load, as well as anxiety about school performance and peer relationships, are also seen by parents as contributing to sleep problems,” added Clark.
“Sleep-deprived teens may have difficulty concentrating in school and those who drive have an increased risk of auto accidents. Inadequate sleep has also been linked to health problems ranging from obesity to depression,” she concluded.

A harrowing problem indeed! If not properly diagnosed and treated, it could have long term effects on the mental growth of a child.
