Bengaluru International Airport to launch facial recognition by next year

Date:

On Thursday, the Bengaluru International Airport revealed plans of launching the facial recognition facility for passengers flying by select airlines from 2019. This according to them would make the boarding process easy and paperless.

The use of the biometric self-boarding process aims at changing and enhancing the experience of a passenger at the airport as well as making an airport that is ready for the future.

Through the biometric technology, the passengers’ identification will be done through their faces while they move around the airport and the passengers would not be required to stop anywhere to show any boarding pass or ID proof such as a passport for check-in.

The project has been initiated by the DigiYatra and it hopes to minimise the paperwork required for travelling by flight. A digital system will be installed at the airport for flyers entering the airport and while boarding the flights that would require the Aadhaar and mobile phone numbers for verification.

Hyderabad will lead the project as the first airport to get the facial recognition facility by the end of 2018.

The first phase of the project will commence by the first quarter of next year and the flights that would begin with the process would be Jet Airways, AirAsia, and SpiceJet.
