Due to heavy rainfall all over the country, albeit irregularly , there has been an increasing risk of flash floods. Now the government does have plans but plans work only after everyone knows of it and we obviously can’t predict where flash foods are going to happen
Or can we?
There is a model of detecting flash floods that is slowly being modernised and it is called the Flash flood guiding system. this has been initiated world wide by the World Meteorological Organisation and in India by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)
under Ministry of Earth Sciences .
What are flash floods?
Heavy rain can cause flash floods in many areas but other factors like dam failures, ice jams and snow melts can cause water levels to rise quickly as well. Flash floods are any flood that develops in less than six hours .
they occur in many place but are most common in areas which are low altitude and poor drainage systems.
Approximately 85% of Indian land is vulnerable to one or more natural hazards and flash floods just happen to be one of them
What is being done?
the flood warning system mainly does to things and that is to detect and forecast threatening flood levels so that the public can be informed in advance and take an appropriate stance to minimise impact. This is technology is vital in nature to developing countries, where flooding results in massive loss of life and property.
Will this stop flooding? No but it will certainly help us to adapt to this ever changing planet.
