Modi meets Xi, Putin at BRICS, talks of fourth industrial revolution, multilateralism

At the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for reformed multilateralism, asked the nations to work together in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution which is ringing in a new world order and met with the leaders of other nations including China and Russia.
In his address he underlined the need for India to work closely work with BRICS nations in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as the theme, of the 10th BRICS Summit, was “BRICS in Africa: Collaboration for Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity in the fourth Industrial Revolution”.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres. The first one was in the eighteenth century.
Prime Minister Modi who arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday to attend the summit called for sharing the best practices and policies in the connection, while adding that technology can help to enhance better service delivery, productivity levels.

“Today the world is standing at the crossroads of all kinds of changes. The new industrial technologies and digital interface that are building a new world; they represent opportunity and a challenge. With new systems and products, they will be new paths to economic progress,” the prime minister said.

“The fourth industrial revolution will have more importance than the capital. There will be radical changes in industrial production, design, and manufacturing. We will have to design the syllabus of our schools and universities in a way that it prepares the youth for future,” the Prime Minister noted.

Addressing a press conference here, officials from the Ministry of External affairs  said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi voiced the requirement for United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms.
“Prime Minister said what we need today’s is reformed multilateralism. He stressed on the importance of UNSC reforms,” a government official said while briefing newspersons. The Prime Minister also stressed on the need for BRICS cooperation for global portable social security framework, which will benefit nearly 215 million people who are working outside their nations.
Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday, finished the last leg of his Africa tour and presented India’s statement at the BRICS leaders’ closed session earlier today.
In the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the third time one in less than four months, Modi discussed ways to enhance exports to China among other issues.

After the meeting with President Xi, India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said “Both PM Modi and President Xi Jinping have reaffirmed once again their readiness to give the necessary direction to their militaries to enhance communications between them and to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas.”

Furthermore, Gokhale said an Indian delegation will visit China on August 1 and 2 to examine ways to enhance trade and exports, an issue that has been discussed in previous meetings. Indian trade delegation will be travelling to China on August 1 and 2.

“The two leaders also agreed that the high-level people-to-people mechanism which will be established on the two sides and will be headed by External affairs minister on the Indian side and the state council and Chinese minister on the Chinese side will also meet this year,” Gokhale added.

The two leaders will next meet in Argentina at the G20 Summit in November this year.

Modi recalled his visit to Sochi when he Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that the friendship between India and Russia was moving forward.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Putin for successfully organising the FIFA World Cup 2018, adding that hosting the event “has given a boost to power and image of Russia.

Meanwhile, President Putin highlighted that trade between the two countries had risen by 24 per cent last year. “We are getting ready to visit India in October. Our efforts were quite successful and our mutual trade continued to grow,” he added.

He also met Argentinean President Mauricio Macri and Joao Lourenço, the President of Angola.
