Kerber beats Williams to claim maiden Wimbledon title

Date:

Wimbledon: German tennis player Angelique Kerber has taken her first Wimbledon title after ousting none other than 23-time Grand Slam holder Serena Williams of the USA in the final.

The 2016 Australian Open champion got off to a brilliant start, immediately breaking her well-decorated US opponent to take a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the match.

Williams fought back hard to cut the deficit, making the score 3-2 to her advantage. However, her efforts were not enough to reverse the course of the game as the tenacious Kerber regained her composure to seal a 6-3 win in the opening set.

The second set saw an uncompromised battle between the two tennis stars, in which neither wanted to surrender. Kerber, the 11th seed, proved to be more precise with her shots, helping her to make a crucial break in the middle of the second set.

The US tennis icon failed to break back, allowing her less experienced opponent to celebrate an overall victory, 6-3, 6-3. Kerber clinched the coveted trophy, denying Williams a chance to grab her 24th Grand Slam title.

Williams had produced a stunning comeback to competitive tennis, reaching the Wimbledon final on her first attempt after returning from maternity leave.

Last year, the 36-year-old player took a break from the competitive sport, announcing her pregnancy shortly after claiming her 23rd Grand Slam at the 2017 Australian Open.

Williams returned to tennis in March and charged to the final of the Wimbledon, which was her fourth tournament of the year.
