New Delhi: Supreme Court judge Adarsh Kumar Goel, who retired on Friday, has been appointed as the chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

Goel, best remembered for passing the controversial judgment on diluting provisions of the SC/ST Act, has been appointed to the post for five years, read a statement.
The post of the chairperson of the green tribunal had been vacant for the past eight months after Justice Swatanter Kumar retired on December 19.

Justice Goel was appointed as a Supreme Court judge in July 2014.
Established on October 18, 2010, the National Green Tribunal disposes cases related to environmental protection and conservation of forests and other natural resources.
