Goa bans selfie on coastline due to increased accidents

Selfie-takers will not be able to click pictures on certain Goa beaches and Instagram them. The government of Goa has created 24 ‘no selfie’ zones along the coastline, due to the increased number of accidents near the coast. People trying to get a picture with the surf behind them has resulted in many deaths.

According to a 2016 study, 76 out of 127 selfie deaths across the world have taken place in India. Majority of these deaths were related to heights, vehicles or water levels.

Southern Railways’ Salem division charged passengers, Rs 2000, for taking selfies inside station premises after two travelers from Tamil Nadu died in separate accidents. Both were taking selfies swept away by sea waves and drowned .
