Mumbai drowns yet again as infrastructure collapses

Date:

It was deja vu for Mumbaikars, as monsoon rains yet again led to water logging at railway stations and roads. Several local trains were held up or running late and bumper-to-bumper traffic was reported in many places across Mumbai on Monday morning.

Water-logging was also reported from low-lying areas with pumps kept on stand-by to avoid trouble. A 13-year-old boy was killed and his parents were injured when an adjacent wall collapsed on their house at Wadol village in Ambernath taluka of Thane around 2.15 am today, the district civic body’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

In another incident, a 65-feet compound wall of a housing complex in Thane city collapsed this morning, crushing two cars and another vehicle, he said.

The district received 229.81 mm rain in the last 24 hours, Kadam added.

According to ANI, the rains have claimed two lives so far. Five people were reportedly injured when a tree fell on them at MG road, near Metro Cinema in Mumbai, yesterday.

The arrival of flights at Mumbai airport was affected due to continuous downpour on Sunday afternoon. The main runway was closed for flight operations for about 30 minutes, during which four go-arounds were carried out.

The MeT department also said that continuous rain or thundershower is likely to occur in city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places in the next 24 hours. It has also issued forecast for next 48 hours.

“Intermittent rain/thundershower likely to occur in city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy falls at one or two places in the next 48 hours,” said the weather agency.
