Karnataka rains: PM Narendra Modi assures help, CM Kumaraswamy takes control of the situation

As heavy rain lashed the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi in Karnataka, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to officials and directed them to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas. Coastal Karnataka is likely to receive more rain on Wednesday.


“I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected by heavy rains in various parts of Karnataka. Have spoken to officials and asked them to ensure all possible assistance in the affected areas,” Modi said in a tweet.

Roads in many parts of Mangaluru and other cities remained flooded as vehicular traffic crawled and boats were used to ferry stranded schoolchildren. Coastal Karnataka is likely to receive more rain on Wednesday, the weather office has said. The India Meteorological Department in its forecast has sent out a warning for coastal Karnataka, interior Karnataka and Goa till June 1.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy took stock of the situation and assured relief to the coastal areas on a war footing. He said on Wednesday that the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) team has been rushed to Mangaluru and Udupi. He directed the district administration to take Coast Guard’s help to rescue people and ordered that necessary steps be taken to prevent loss of lives.

The heavy rains in parts of Karnataka have claimed three lives so far, according to reports.
