Smriti Irani nixed as I&B Minister, Rathore checks in, Piyush gets Finance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, made changes in his cabinet late Monday night, on the back of finance minister Arun Jaitley’s successful renal surgery earlier that day. Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal will now hold additional charge of Finance Ministry till Jaitley recovers, while Smriti Irani, whose tenure as the Information and Broadcasting Minister was mired in controversy, was divested of the portfolio.
Rajyavardhan Rathore, who was Irani’s deputy, will now hold independent charge of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting Minister. Irani was earlier shifted from the Ministry of Human Resource Development to the relatively low-profile Textile Ministry. She continues to be the Textile Minister.
Goyal will also take additional charge of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, which was held by Arun Jaitley, in addition to his current portfolio of railway ministry.
SS Ahluwalia has been given the portfolio of Minister of State for Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (Meity) and relieved of his charges of Minister of State in Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation. Alphons Kannanthanam has been relieved of his charge as MoS in Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology but will continue to the Minister of State for Tourism.
