Vladimir Putin is due to be sworn in as the president of Russia on Monday after winning the last election in March. This will be his fourth term as the president of the country. However, he has been at the affairs in the country, as a president or prime minister, for eighteen years now.

There have been protests in Moscow and other cities in the country, over his long tenure. On May 5, more than 1,000 demonstrators including opposition leader Alexei Navalny, were detained by the police across 20 cities. Crowds shouted slogans like “Down with the Tsar” and “Russia without Putin”.
Putin will be sworn in for a six-year term. He won the re-election with a 77 percent vote share. Navalny was could not contest the election because of a felony conviction against him.
