India celebrates National Panchayat raj day on 24th April

National Panchayat raj day, also called as National Local Self government day is a national day of India. This day is celebrated by Ministry of Panchayati Raj on April 24 every year.

History
National Panchayat raj day was inaugurated in 2013 by then Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh. The major idea behind celebrating such a day is he said if Panchayati Raj institutions (PRIs) functioned properly and participated in the development process of the country then the threat of Maoist could be countered.

Again in the year 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this day called for an end to the practice of “husbands of women sarpanches” or “sarpanch pati”, which was being exercised under the influence on the work of their wives elected to power.

About
The constitution of our country recognizes Panchayat as ‘Institutions of self-government’. There are 2.51 lakh panchayats in the country, which includes 2.39 Gram Panchayats, 6094 Block Panchayats and 589 District Panchayats. Also, there are more than 29 lakh panchayat representatives.
Under the 14th Finance Commission for the period 2015-20, more than 2 lakh crore Rupees is being allocated to Gram Panchayats for 5 years to undertake physical and social infrastructure projects in the villages.

Events Today
Today on the occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mandla in Madhya Pradesh to launch Rashtriya Gramin Swaraj Abhiyan, at a public meeting, and address Panchayati Raj representatives across the country, from Mandla.
PM Modi will also unveil a roadmap for overall development of tribal’s during the next five years which will highlight the focus on Sabka saath sabka Vikas. PM will also felicitate the Sarpanches of the villages keeping in mind the government’s mission towards clean, healthy and electrified India. PM will felicitate Sarpanchas who have achieved 100 percent smokeless kitchen, 100 percent vaccination under Mission Indradhanush, and 100 percent electrification under Saubhagya Scheme.
PM Modi visit ot Mandla on the occasion of National Panchayat Raj Day is an indication of the government’s commitment to bring people in remote regions into the developmental mainstream.
