Winter session in Parliament comes to an end without passing the Triple Talaq bill

Date:

Fireworks are anticipated in Parliament on Friday due to the contentious triple talaq bill during the winter session. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha last week and the Koregaon-Bhima violence that rocked Maharashtra recently. However, there continues to be a logjam in Rajya Sabha and lost 34 hours due to disruptions.

More importantly, the current winter session of the Parliament also concludes today.

Now the Narendra Modi government is expected to make its last-ditch effort to get the Triple Talaq bill approved by the Rajya Sabha due to the deadlock over the bill. However, the chances are grim with the Opposition insisting on sending it a Select Committee for detailed scrutiny.

But the BJP government is not taking keen on sending the bill to the Select Committee so it has rejected the Opposition’s demand. Meanwhile, the Opposition also expected to demand Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement over rising atrocities on Dalits due to the recent Koregaon-Bhima violence that engulfed entire Maharashtra.

Since there’s no agreement in the Upper House, the government on Thursday placed the bill in the bottom of priority in the list of business. But the Opposition strongly objected to and demanded that its motions for referring the bill to a Select Committee be taken up immediately.

Since both the ruling and opposition are at loggerheads 34 business hours have been wasted.

Now the session will begin on January 29th and it remains to be seen whether the Triple Talaq bill will be sent to a Select Committee or the Opposition passes it.
