The significance of the festival of Dhanteras in cities

Diwali is a five-day long festival and Dhanteras marks the beginning of it.

The term Dhanteras translates to mean wealth and prosperity. It falls during the month of Ashwin and is celebrated on the 13th day, according to the Hindu lunar calendar.

Dhanteras 2017 has fallen on October 17.

On this day, people purchase gold and utensils along with new clothes. Goddess Lakshmi, who is regarded as the goddess of wealth, is welcomed into homes and people light diyas in their homes to celebrate this day. It is believed that worshipping her will bring wealth and good fortune in the house.

We all do have a special corner in our hearts (and shopping bags) for the yellow metal. We don’t really need an occasion to invest in gold, but Dhanteras is a time when investment is also about scoring the best that the market has to offer.

This year, the most common trend among buyers is leaning towards popular Bollywood epics. And, customers want set pieces customized to look like they are straight out of the movie!

Several people from the cities that are purchasing gold during the festival of Dhanteras are willing to purchase the jewellery that is worn by actors in various films. For instance, there is a great demand for the jewellery worn by Deepika Padukone in the trailers of her upcoming movie, Padmavati. Many people are also asking for the jewellery worn in Baahubali and Jodha Akbar.

A jeweller told the media that, “Out of 10 customers, eight are asking for Padmavati jewellery. Deepika has nailed it this time! The only issue is that I keep telling my customers that such jewellery doesn’t have a long life. The designs are so intricate that they break down easily. But, they still ask for it, such is the trend”.

The craze that we all have for jewellery and Bollywood has shown its results this Dhanteras.

Wishing you all the luck and prosperity at the on- set of this festive season.
