The movie “it” made a staggering 172 million in its worldwide debut, in the process breaking collection records in America for a movie of the horror genre.
The movie made 117.2 million in North America and 62 million from other 46 territories on its opening day.
Directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise the clown, the story is about a group of bullied children who call their group “The Losers Club” who stand up against a demonic entity which appears as a scary clown which preys on innocent people, most frequently on children.
The movie made $12.3 million in the U.K, accounting for 82% of the market there. Other top territories include Russia ($6.7 million), Australia ($5.9 million), and Brazil ($5.6 million).
The movie in the North American market broke the record for box office debut in the horror genre which was previously held by “Paranormal Activity 3” which made 52.6 million on its opening day in 2011.
Moreover “it” is now the record holder for the biggest debut any movie releasing in the month of September in North America.
The movie has received rave reviews with many claiming the movie to be one of the best horror movies of the year.The movie has released just days after “Annabelle: Creation” from “The Conjuring” franchise had a 36 million domestic debut.
