The officers will now have to choose cadres from zones instead of states according to the new policy. The officers may or may not be selected for central deputation during the course of service depending upon the eligibility and criteria. Under the new cadre allocation rule by the personnel ministry, the 26 cadre states have been divided into 5 zones.

The officers are now allowed to select only one state from a zone for their first preference while second, third, fourth and fifth choices have to be from different zones. Previously the selected officers generally chose their home state as their cadre and neighboring states as their other preferences.
