The Bharatiya Janata Party’s Parliamentary Board on Wednesday announced party president Amit Shah and newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani as party candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Gujarat on August 8.
The announcement was made by the Board’s secretary, JP Nadda and the party hopes to bring the party president to the Parliament for the first time. Amit Shah is currently a legislator in the Gujarat state assembly.
According to BJP, the party can secure two seats in the Upper House and has thus fielded Shah and Irani. The party, however, did not announce a candidate for the third seat, which is expected to be won by Congress candidate Ahmed Patel. In a bid to prevent the Congress from taking the seat, BJP is expected to lend its support to an independent candidate, who would be strong enough to effect defections from the Congress.
