A man in Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh was forced to the carry dead body of his niece, Poonam, the minor girl who had died on Monday morning after a severe bout of diarrhoea, on a bicycle after being denied an ambulance by a government hospital, in yet another case of lack of medical concern in the state.

The hospital authorities allegedly asked Poonam’s uncle to pay the fuel cost of an ambulance if he wanted to avail the service to take the dead body home. Poonam’s family was finding it difficult even to bear the cost of treatment at the district hospital, where she had been admitted since Saturday, and were not in any position to pay extra for the fuel charges. He had to carry her till their village, which was about 10 kms away. A FIR has been lodged against the doctor on duty.

On May 20, a man had to carry his dead wife on a stretcher for some distance after being denied ambulance. In another horrible incident, a labourer was forced to carry the body of his 15-year-old son on his shoulder a few months ago after being allegedly denied help by doctors at a government hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah district.
