A hostage situation that developed in Melbourne’s Brighton area has ended with two people dead and three police officers injured.
Police were called to the scene after reports of an explosion in the area. The local police discovered the body of a man shot to death in the foyer of an apartment building.
The police attempted to negotiated with the gunman who had taken a woman hostage. The confrontation ended in gunfire with the gunman being shot dead by police and the woman was also safely rescued by the authorities.
The police are presently investigating whether the explosion and subsequent hostage situation is related to terrorism.
