If your heart is that of a true wanderer, these are the ten lesser known places that are a must-go to satiate that wanderlust.

We wanderers have given our hearts to the free spirits of the seas and the unfathomed might of the mountains and now our souls keep vying for the unexplored. These are ten places that are not raided by tourists and haven’t been turned to another ‘Delhi-Mumbai on the mountains’ like the exhilarating Mussoorie or Manali.
In these sweltering summers, beat-the-heat like pro.

Abbott Mount

Abbott Mount

Abbot mount is a hidden destination in the Himalayas, it is situated 6400 ft. above the sea level. The area is completely isolated from the vociferous city life; there are only thirteen secluded cottages spread all over the hill. The hill provides a ravishing view of the Himalayas. Bird watching, trekking and photography are few things that should drive you to this place. The place is also a base camp for anglers who wish to fish Mahseer at Pancheshwar River. Dense forests of Deodar and Pine and the chirruping of Himalayan birds will make this place unforgettable to you.

Location: Champawat district, Uttarakhand. About 80 km from Tanakpur Railway station and 8 kms from Lohaghat. (437 km from Delhi)

Chikhaldara

Chikhaldara

Chikhaldara is beautiful, scenic and relaxing; everything that you want. A practically unexplored area, the place has lakes and a rich wildlife. Kitchakdari and Shakkar lakes, Gawilghur Fort, the temples around, the wildlife museum and of course, the view points are the prime attraction. A tiger sanctuary is icing on the cake.

Location: Satpura Range, Maharashtra, about a 100 km from Amravati. (750 km from Mumbai and 1,183 km from Delhi)

Bhowali

Bhowali

One of the less trodden mountain peaks in Uttarakhand, Bhowali is located at an altitude of 1,076m above sea level. You have nature walks, horse riding, or even rock climbing to rejuvenate yourself. You can have peaceful forest walks in this area. Trekking to Naina Peak is another important thing that you can look forward to. Peaches, plums, strawberries and apricots dominate the orchards of Bhowali. The famous ‘Food-Bazaar’ makes Bhowali a wholesome experience.

Yelagiri

Yelagiri

Yelagiri, Tamilnadu is a much less frequented hill station than Ooty or Kodaikanal and still hasn’t got its big tourism push, so you can make the most of that now. Again, while it’s very peaceful, and the scenery is nice, don’t expect the kind of beauty that will grip you in the gut like in the Himalayas. There is an artificial lake (Punganoor) where you can go boating, and it has a park built around it which is a nice place for an evening walk. There are also multiple view points and a few trekking options. Now you can even try paragliding in Yelagiri!

Chaukori

Chaukori

located in the high hill of Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand at a height of 2010m above sea level, Chaukori has beautiful tea gardens. The undulating terrains are perched with emerald green tea gardens overlooking the benign summits of the nearby mountains. The sunset and sunrise is spellbinding in Chaukori. The forest is rich in pine, oak, and rhododendron trees and interspersed with cornfields and orchards. Detached from all sorts of artificiality, Chaukori is a must-go.

Harsil

Harsil

Murmuring water of river Bhagirathi, chirping of birds and dense deodar forests at an elevation of 2620 m above sea level is what defines Harsil. Trekking from Harsil to Chitkul via Lamkhaga Pass is a mojor thrill here thrill. The flowing waters and the view of snow clad Himalayas make for a peaceful and serine tour. The flourishing apple orchards flourishing make place for a great evening walk.

Location: 72 km after Uttarkashi on the Uttarkashi-gangotri road. (474km from Delhi)

Kangojodi

Kangojodi

Kangojodi, a 7 kms long pine forest area is right in the middle of nowhere. There is no habitation in this area except for a few campsites. Kangojodi is your place if you wish to go on an offsite camp. Lush green pine forest area, rare species of flora & fauna, a natural spring water stream flowing at the ridge of the valley and fresh air might convince you to never comeback. The place doesn’t even have streets! Solitude is a sure bet if you are going to kangojodi.

Tawang

Tawang

A hidden nooks in the hills of Eastern Himalayas. It’s stupendously beautiful. Shonga-Tser Lake, formed by an earthquake is an unmissable beauty. Pangang Teng Tso is another lake that will bewitch your soul. These are lakes in the Himalayas – they are pristine, with water so clear that you can see the reflections of mountains and trees in them. For those seriously into trekking and climbing, maybe you could make the trip here to conquer Goi ichen! Even if you just like to play at trekking, getting to the base camp will be an exhilarating and challenging experience. There is also the Tawang Monastery, where the sixth Dalai Lama was born. Set a day aside to visit the Jang Falls, too.

Pelling

Pelling

Pelling is near to Gangtok and if you go to the place you might decide never to come back, it is that beautiful. It not as well developed as Gangtok, and it’s smaller and maybe that is what you want. It is also the starting point for some excellent treks, and the town itself has a few stunning view points that can very well rival Gangtok. The Pemayangtse monastery, Changey and Khangchendzonga waterfalls and Khecheopalri Lake are beautiful and deserve a visit.

Idukki

Idukki

Idukki is one of the most beautiful districts in South India and has not been overrun by tourists , so you can get there ahead of the crowd. You reach Idukki through forests rich in diverse flora and fauna, particulary elephants. The place has a dam and lake once you get there apart from the general scenic beauty. The hairpin turns on the way are lovely, so you’ll want the chance to stop and take photos or just look. The place will leave you spell bound with its serine beauty and would never feel like coming back. Solitude and peace is your sure reward if you visit Idukki.
