On 21st January Gurgaon organizations led by women such as Gurgaon Action Plan, Gurgaon Community Circle, Saahas for Women, NeoFusion Foundation, Ecolib Foundation, ACT, Magic Creations and others came forward in solidarity for the nationwide movement for women #IWillGoOut to reclaim public spaces across India. Several women carried out a candle light peaceful protest outside DT city centre expressing their dismay at the state of women’s safety in urban spaces.
The Bengaluru Molestation and the recent case of attempted abduction of a IT executive on MGRd in Gurgaon are not stray instances and authorities have time and again let these off lightly.
Women have a right to go out work, shop, party and express themselves normally like their male counterparts. Cities and urban communities have a responsibility to ensure safe roads, public spaces, transport and workplaces.
Smriti Chhabra, Souniya Khurana, Dr Anubhooti Bhatnagar, Nilanjana Das Gauri Sarin and other social leaders shared their commitment to work for improving awareness and taking steps towards better safety.
