Weekend Movie Review: Pink

Date:

Pink as a stark naked in your face powerful story about every working girl in every city of India day to day problems that every working woman in cities not only in India but many other parts of the world identify with and relate too.

Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang are the working girls. They share a flat in South Delhi locality equipped with its bespectacled peeping top uncleji’s and difficult neighbors. One night after a rock concert in Surajkund in Haryana they girls join their male friend for dinner. The dinner goes horribly wrong and one of the boys is left with a dangerous injury caused by Taapsee’s character in the film. Cases and counter cases are registered and things reach the court. The rest is a long very well scripted court drama.

It is the court drama that is the field where the story is told in the questioning and exchanges between lawyers and those involved. Piyush Mishra as the counsel for the boys is outstanding once again brilliant in his portrayal of the aggressive lawyer who will defend his client at any cost. What holds this film is the well scripted court drama which does to use the aggressive to tell its story a huge plus considering that most directors use foul language to tell a story. The character of the boys could have been stronger in its etching feels Denzil in this review.

Pannu, Kulhari and Tariang, all very good, are perfect examples of the dilemmas faced by 21st century working young women in Delhi. All three are brilliant and true to their depiction of their character. The and the young men who accost them are very much a part of a certain kind of coarse North Indian ethos—they bully but are too cowardly to do this on their own, needing patronage and protection from the nexus of `netas’ and police which exists only to protect them, not call them out on their wrong-doing), but this could happen anywhere, and not just in India. It is a telling story on how the system in India both police and judicial weigh in against the woman when she stands in a court of law.

Amitabh Bachchan is the lawyer who eventually helps the girls out wit their case. He is crisp sometimes stoic in the play out of his role as a lawyer. His command over his acting is well nuanced and almost minimalistic at times which to some may look like underplayed especially since so much is expected. That said brilliant performance once again Mr. Bachchan especially the monologue in the end No means No delivered in his deep baritone is a brilliant flourish on which this film ends.

There are many statements made in the Pink movie on the way society looks at single working women. It is their story. It tells of the reality of the leching uncles in residential societies about the sneering colleagues at work who won’t miss an opportunity to kick up dirt and scandal. It is about how many men in cities may have grown up but not out of a feudal mind set where they are lord and master of all the survey. Denzil in his Pink review feels that this is a hard hitting well-structured and powerfully told using the different tools of script and dialogue to deliver a statement on society and its ills. The beauty of Pink lies in the fact that is highly relatable. This case could happen with any girl or woman in any family across Indian and maybe in the world as well.

On the minus side Denzil in his Pink review spells out how the character of the boys in the film was not etched with the brilliance with which the three girls character was brought to life. It would have made for a compelling drama if they were a bit better etched.

The background score too while it does build up the suspense does make more noise than it should to announce the moment.

Pink is a compelling watch where a strong watertight script is backed by some powerhouse performances especially from Taapsee Panu and the girls to give you a must watch at the cinemas this weekend,Denzil adds in his review especially for the menfolk.
