Reports of injuries after man opens fire at German cinema

A MAN HAS opened fire at a cinema in Germany, according to report, several people had been taken hostage, but reports now suggest that the man has been shot dead after police stormed the cinema.

Public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk said that at least 25 people were hurt when the man fired shots, although this has not yet been confirmed by authorities, says report.

Some reports said they were injured by tear gas. The Interior Ministry confirmed to the public service broadcaster that the man had been shot dead.

The man entered the cinema at 3pm in the western town of Viernheim, wearing a mask and carrying a cartridge belt and barricaded himself in, according to Bild.

A German police spokesman only confirmed “an unclear threat situation”. Specialist police units are at the scene. Additional reporting by AFP.
