Start-up Oyo faces new employee turbulence

Date:

Picture this- a long queue of people waiting for their turn to get inside; a group of aspirants roaming around in the corridor as the place where they are called to doesn’t even have proper seating arrangement; few of them even sitting on the staircase as they are too tired to even keep standing in the queue anymore.

You must be thinking that this is some kind of coaching institute or some college students inside the university campus eagerly waiting for their semester results right?

Wrong! They are interviewees who are eagerly waiting to find a job for themselves in India’s one of the most talked about start-up of its kind-Oyo Rooms.

This is just a glimpse of the current scenario and if you are curious, let us get to know the company in a bit detailed format now.

Flashback, 2013: Oyo shot to glory soon after it was launched in 2013 by the then 18 year old Ritesh Agarwal as it was a unique concept in its space and it managed to carve out a special niche category in the start-up ecosystem.

OYO Rooms claimed to have grown to more than 200 hotels in 10 cities; booking 50,000 rooms every month.

Mid 2015, the company received funding of about $100 million from SoftBank Group. Other investors included Greenoaks Capital, Sequoia Capital, and Lightspeed India.

Oyo rooms reportedly were in talks to buy rival Zo Rooms and the company’s estimated worth approximately stands at about Rs 2,500 crores.

All seems pretty hunky dory right? Now fast forward to December, 2015 and Oyo seems to be on a mass hiring spree and as explained earlier, the scene outside the Oyo office in Gurgaon tells a different tale altogether. While all might be good and profitable with the company, the prospective employees who come for interviews are not treated that well.

Err! You are in hospitality sector right Oyo?
