After years of creating supercars that were almost exclusively all-wheel drive, Lamborghini has returned to rear-wheel-drive basics with the debut of the Huracan LP 580-2.
The mid-engine V-10 coupe, announced a day before the Los Angeles auto show, is the third – and the cheapest – Huracan road car after the AWD coupe and convertible variants.
“The Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 continues the Lamborghini tradition of pure, visionary and technology-driven models,” Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann said in a statement.
The substantially re-engineered LP580-2 is set to arrive early next year, boasting a more modest 571bhp version of the all-wheel-drive LP 610-4’s 602bhp 5.2 litre V10.
Lacking the traction on takeoff, the RWD model’s 0-to-100kph time is 3.4 seconds, 0.2 second slower than the Huracan LP 610-4 coupe. Top speed is 199mph.
The Huracan LP 580-2 will start at $201,100 including a gas guzzler tax (the cost of shipping has not been set), or about $39,000 less than the AWD LP 610-4 coupe.
