Know some ‘iconic’ Indian soap operas on world TV day

New Delhi: Television has become a very important aspect in our lives and the time is here when we cannot accept our lives without this box.
Over the years, many television series came and went, but there were some that made a permanent mark in the viewer’s mind and still give them flashbacks.

So on World Television Day, let’s recall some of the iconic Indian television series we use to watch with our family and cherish the old memories:

Hum Paanch

First aired in 1995, this series might have had a running period of only five years, but it is regarded as one of the all-time favourite comedy series of the Indian television and was the highest TRP gainer of the 90s. Not only this series gave an actress, like Vidya Balan, to the industry, other actors including Ashok Saraf, Rakhee Tandon, Bhairavi Raichura, Vandana Pathak gained over-night stardom with it.

Shaktimaan

When we think of the first Indian super hero, the only name that strikes by is Shaktimaan. Originally aired on Doordarshan, the show started in 1997 and had a running period of eight years. Along with Hindi, this show was aired in many other languages, including English, Oriya and Tamil.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi

Not only this serial began the era of ‘saas-bahu’ sitcoms, it also portrayed a different image of the bahus (daughter-in-laws), as Smriti Irani, the main lead was often seen fighting the evil to protect her family. Being categorised as the best TRP gainer, this show ran from 2000-2008 and completing 1833 episodes.

Khichdi

This was the first show in the history of Indian television that adopted western model of appearing on screens. With two season, Khichdi and Instant Khichdi, this sitcom gave us unforgettable characters like Hansa and Praful. Called as a perfect blend of acting skills and good scripting, the show was turned into a film in 2010.

Remix

Breaking the tradition of the ‘saas-bahu’ sitcoms, this two year-long serial was a great hit amongst youngsters as after a very long time they felt connected with something. After the serial became a hit, a music album was also launched on the same name, which stayed in Top Five Best-Sellers list for 5 consecutive weeks.

Like the above listed shows, there were many other breath-taking serials that included ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh,’ ‘Office Office,’ ‘Kahani Ghar Ghar ki,’ ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ and ‘Kasautii Zindagii Kay’ that have been a landmark in the history of Indian television.
