‘East-Asia Summit to focus on ISIS threat’

Date:

The current threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to the world will be the focus of the upcoming East Asia Summit in Malaysia where the world leaders will gather once again after the recently concluded G20 Summit in Turkey.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart for the Summit on Friday.

“I think this issue (ISIS) will definitely be discussed. Terrorism is one of the issues that has been consistently discussed in the East Asia Summit context in the last couple of years. The focus will definitely be on this issue,” Anil Wadhwa, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs told the media here.

He expressed his confidence on the issue being addressed by the foreign delegations present at the Summit as India already has a declaration on ‘violent extremism’.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Modi called for disrupting the fund flow that aids the terrorists’ abilities to execute attacks.

“The dastardly acts committed in Paris a few days ago are a grim reminder that terrorists have shown remarkable flexibility and adaptability in meeting their funding requirements. They derive funding from a variety of criminal activities which include smuggling of narcotics, bank robbery, vehicle theft, fake currency, or from state sponsors and activities in failed states,” he said addressing the Sixth Global Focal Point conference on Asset Recovery here.

The Prime Minister had also proposed a 10-point plan to tackle terrorism at the G20 Summit and called for a united global effort to fight terror.
