The deep depression, which had intensified over the Bay of Bengal area, made a landfall near Puducherry on Monday, bringing some respite in the form of rain in the coastal parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The state has been witnessing heavy rainfall and winds for the last few days, bringing normal life to a screeching halt. In Chennai, schools, colleges had been advised to remain closed because of the prediction of heavy rainfall. While offices remained open, many had to struggle to get to them.
The Metrological Department (IMD) had released an advisory, asking fishermen not to venture out into sea. As a precautionary measure, a cyclone alert was also announced in the state.
