Pakistani singer Adnan Sami is all set to become an Indian citizen. If reports are to be believed, the singer is likely to be granted Indian citizenship.
The decision was taken after Attorney-General Mukul Rohatgi gave a favourable opinion to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
His request for Indian citizenship on the grounds that he has renounced his Pakistani citizenship, making India, where he has been staying for a decade-and-a-half, his “home”, has been endorsed by the attorney general of India and the Union home ministry is mulling granting him “citizenship by naturalization” in view of his “distinguished service to the cause of art”.
Earlier, Sami was exempted from deportation proceedings under Section 3 of the Foreigners Act. In 2009, Mr. Sami’s wife filed a case of cheating and cruelty against him in Mumbai. But the MHA officials came to a conclusion that case filed against him was civil and that it shouldn’t come in the way of the decision to grant him citizenship.
Sami has sung in various Hindi films, the latest being a qawali for the Salman Khan-starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
