Geeta, the 23 year old specially-abled Indian woman living in Pakistan will return home on October 26, over a decade after accidentally crossing over the border.
She will be accompanied by five officials from charitable Edhi Foundation, which had been looking after her.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that Geeta would be handed over to the family in India only after the DNA tests match.
“Geeta has already identified one family as possibly being that of her parents, we will be doing the DNA testing to establish conclusive proof if the DNA test match Geeta would be handed over to the family. If not we have identified suitable institution where Geeta would be looked after,” MEA official spokesperson Vikas Swarup told the media in a briefing.
“On October 26, we will be bringing Geeta back to India. Together with Geeta, we have invited five official family members of Edhi foundation they will be treated as state guest during their stay in India,” Swarup added.
Geeta was reportedly just 7 or 8 years old when she was found sitting alone on the Samjhauta Express by the Pakistan Rangers 15 years ago at the Lahore railway station.
Police took her to the Edhi Foundation in Lahore and later she was shifted to Karachi.
