‘India wants to create an arc of prosperity in Cambodia’

Day 2 of Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari’s Cambodian visit sent out one clear message: India wants to create an arc of prosperity in the region. Anil Wadhwa, secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs, while briefing on the Vice President’s meeting with the Cambodian leadership, confirmed this.

Vice President Hamid Ansari told the Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen during their talks in Phnom Penh that India’s relationship with Cambodia was a “key element” in its engagement with the key regional grouping as the country moves forward with the Act East policy.

“We hope to launch this new initiative soon and I am confident that in the near future more Indian companies will explore the investment opportunities here,” Ansari told the audience which included ministers, top officials and university and school students.

“My visit to Cambodia underscores the importance India attaches to Cambodia as part of our increasing engagement with the region. Geographically, Cambodia lies at the heart of ASEAN. For us in India, our relationship with Cambodia is a key element of our engagement with ASEAN,” the Vice President said, Cambodia, on its part, thanked the indelible ink from India that was used in the Cambodian elections.

During the address at the council of Minister, it was made clear that both India and Cambodia value the heritage of Buddhism and shared cultural ties, Hinduism and Buddhism being the common threads.

Ansari commended the transformation of Cambodia growing at 7 percent.

India laid emphasis on improvement of life in Cambodia. Ansari said that India will take up projects for harnessing of water resources in the future.

Apart from that, he also stressed on skill development and capacity building — more than a 1000 Cambodians have been trained in India under the itec.

He said that Mekong Ganga cooperation would be intensified, there would be quick impact projects for malaria control, women empowerment and local community.

Grant of $50,000 would be given to the entrepreneur development centre which is functioning since 2004.

He said that he is proud to be associated with restoration of Angkor Wat and said that there is more to be done.

The first Asean summit was held in Cambodia in which they reaffirmed support for India as a member of the UNSC 25 itec slots from 17.
Buddhist monks scholarships were announced and journalists would be invited for English language training centre. There would be special vehicle facility to increase bilateral trade.

India invited Cambodian PM Hun Sen to visit India.

A tourism MoU was signed and a proposal for a direct flight to India was floated.

Cambodia wants a softer terms for lines of credit for a power transmission line and promised support for India’s Look East policy. There were discussions on institutionalising the security cooperation and bilateral investment protection agreement to be negotiated. There would be identification of sectors for the economic growth. It was also promised that any requirement from the Cambodian side from defence cooperation would be taken by India.
