We told you a few months ago about the Spinning Sisters, the fusion hula hoop dance group out of Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Their unique blend of dance and hula hoop tricks is entertaining enough, but they have also started to venture into themes. Their latest dance, “Armistice” incorporated a World War II theme, and they introduced it in August to a lot of critical acclaim. The dance shows the harrowing effects of war, and ends with a message of peace. Armistice is about ceasing war – as war continues throughout the world even now, some 75 years later.
The dance depicts a war among three nations, and eventually through the fighting, two of the nations are destroyed. One emerges the winner, but then realizes that they are alone, and feels remorse for what they have done, but it is too late. The message comes on “In war there are no winners, only losers.”
If three young high school girls can see that war has no winners, why can we adults not see it? Not to be lost in all of this is the intricate talent that these girls show in their unique dance as well.
Elora Mukhopadhyay is the founder and lead choreographer of the group. She is fifteen years old, and is an honor student at Lafayette high school in Lexington, Kentucky. She is on her schools student council. Her hobbies include competitive dancing, video blogging, violin, and karate. She is also an active volunteer in her community.
Kelseigh Newman has been with the group since its inception. She is fourteen years old and attends Paul L. Dunbar high school in Lexington, Kentucky. Her hobbies include competitive band, archery, and gaming. She plays several musical instruments.
Maya Anjur joined the group in 2014. She is fifteen years old and is an honor student at Paul L. Dunbar high school in Lexington, Kentucky. She is on her school’s dance team. Her hobbies include competitive dancing, singing, and playing piano and violin. She is also an active volunteer in her community.
Jessica Mukhopadhyay is Elora’s younger sister and is ten years old. She attends Picadome Elementary school in Lexington, Kentucky. She enjoys competitive dancing and gymnastics.
