The glow worm caves of New Zealand

Date:

The Waitomo Glow Worm Caves are one of New Zealand’s must-see tourist attractions. Glow Worms, or Arachnocampa luminosa as they are scientifically called, are tiny, bioluminescent creatures that produce a bluish green light in the dark. They are creatures found exclusively in New Zealand.

The caves were first explored in 1887 by Maori chief Tane Tinorau. He was accompanied by English surveyor Fred Mace. Once inside, they discovered the Glow Worm Grotto, noticing the thousands of bright lights that dotted the cave ceiling.

The limestone ceiling is by itself fascinating, being formed 30 million years ago, and is a tourist attraction in its own right. The cave was opened to tourists in 1889 by Tinorau and by 1906; the administration of the cave was taken over by the government.

Waitomo is a thriving village that has lots to offer. The picturesque scenery gives you the perfect excuse to go on long walks and drives. Organised tours of the Glow Worm Caves take the visitors through three levels of the cave, starting from the top where the levels are linked by a 16m vertical shaft made of limestone called the Tomo.

The second level is called the Banquet Chamber where visitors can grab a bite to eat. It is possible to return to the upper level from here to observe the Pipe Organ. This is the largest coral formation in the cave.

The final level is the Cathedral, where a number of famous local singers and choirs have performed. You will conclude your journey by taking the famous boat ride through the Glow Worm Caves on the Waitomo River and be able to observe the glow worms in all their splendour.

Prices for the tour begin from $48; they depart every half an hour, starting from 9am. The attraction is open throughout the year, seven days a week, the only exception being Christmas Day.
