Beautification of Dal Lake shoreline enhances tourism

Date:

The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority has developed two parks overlooking the Dal Lake, which has enhanced tourism and is even being used for shooting movies.

Srinagar: In a bid to increase tourism potential in Srinagar, the local authorities are undertaking a beautification and cleanliness drive of the world famous Dal Lake’s shoreline.

The Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA), which is looking after the lake is involved in the project. The authorities believe that the beautification process will enhance potential for earning more revenue from tourists.

“This beautification work has not only enhanced tourism, but also more recently, has been used for the shooting of Bollywood movies. Even people are now reluctant to throw solid waste after the beautification of the shoreline, Feroz Ahmad, Assistant Executive Engineer, LAWDA, told ANI.

The authority so far has developed two parks at very entertaining sites of Makai Point and Settling basin both on the banks of Dal Lake. The parks are open to general public at a nominal entry fee.

The Authority also proposes to establish a mini zoo, boating club, museum and amusement parks along the NFR to be the near future places of recreation.

Kashmir was once dubbed the Switzerland of the east. It was once a Mecca for climbers, skiers, honeymooners and filmmakers drawn to the state’s soaring peaks, fruit orchards and timber houseboats bobbing on Dal Lake in Srinagar.
