Radhika is one of those talented actors who has not only acted in Hindi Film, but also in Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam movies. Radhika is not a quintessential Bollywood heroine. On the contrary she is every reporter’s delight. Ask me why?
Unlike the modern mainstream actresses, Apte does not mind voicing her opinions freely, taking up super bold projects and taking on the so-called taboos of B-town. She has even gone nude for one of her upcoming Hollywood film. With this we can only say Radhika is a free bird!
Glimpse of her career:
Radhika Apte’s debut was a small role in the Hindi film Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! in 2005 followed by a Bengali film Antaheen in which she played the role of a TV journalist. Her other Hindi films are Life Online, The Waiting Room , I Am and Shor in the City under Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Films banner. Her Marathi films are Gho Mala Asla Hava, Ek Marathi Manoos, Amol Palekar’s Marathi film Samaantar, Ha Bharat Maza, and Tamil film Dhoni to name a few. In 2013, she was seen in the Bengali film Rupkatha Noy.
Apte’s first four releases in 2014 were Postcard, Pendulum, Legend and Vetri Selvan in four different languages—Marathi, Bengali, Telugu and Tamil, respectively, followed by another Marathi film, Lai Bhaari. Of these Legend and Lai Bhaari were box-office hits. Apte is actively involved with theatre and has done several stage plays, mostly in Marathi language. Some of these plays are Tu, Purnaviram, Matra Ratra, Uney Purey Shahar Ek, in Marathi; That Time and Bombay Black in English; and Kanyadaan in Hindi.
She has also worked for theatre, short films, and documentary films.
Radhika Apte, who is basking in the success of her recent, released film ‘Hunterrr’, turned out to be a big money spinner at the worldwide box office. The actress got rave reviews from all the corners of the world. The movie was about the lustful journey of a man and the actress played was his love interest. While Sriram Raghavan’s new film ‘Badlapur’ has also earned rave reviews, many have called the film unnecessarily violent and misogynist in nature. Radhika Apte who has impressed one and all with her performance as Koko in the film, was highly appreciated for her role.
Sujoy Ghosh’s chilling short film ‘Ahalya’
The actress was recently seen in Ahalya, the short film by Director Sujoy Ghosh, crafts a modern version of the tale of the young and beautiful Ahalya, married to the much older sage Gautama, who is turned into stone for a transgression involving the God Indra. The jury is out on whether the mythological Ahalya was complicit or an unwittingly assistant but in Sujoy’s retelling at least, the punishment is visited on Indra, rather than the woman.
The Bengali-English film, injected with a dose of the supernatural, stars Soumitra Chatterjee, Radhika Apte and Tota Roy Chowdhury in the roles of Gautam, Ahalya and Indra. Radhika’s shaky Bengali inflection regardless, the exhibitions are fairly fine.
On the career front, Radhika Apte’s upcoming film is filmmaker Ketan Mehta’s Manjhi- The Mountain Man, which also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the titular role of Manjhi and Apte as his wife.
The film is based on the true story of Dasrath Manjhi, the labourer who single-handedly carved a path through a mountain using only a hammer and chisel in memory of his wife, the trailer has already created a lot of buzz and the film is all set to hit the theatres in August.
