How streaming has trickled to its newest avatar

Date:

Remember that time when there used to be one person with a radio on his shoulder, relaying the cricket score when some somebody ask them ‘score kya hua hai?’ But now, even though people still go around asking, ‘score kya hua hain’, the smartphones and other gadgets have kicked the radio out of the scene.

From heavy radio sets with only audio to the current era of YouTube, we have witnessed many changes in terms streaming is concerned.

Let’s find out how this tech revolution brought up a change in the society:

How streaming began

The journey of streaming began from Radio in the 20th century with many ups and downs. But it turned out to be the best source of Information, knowledge and entertainment.

As we all know, Radio is totally audio-based with no visuals, so it’s a big achievement for radio to gain such popularity. As time passed, the physical aspect of radio transformed — from big, heavy boxes, it had become as small as a tiffin box. After some more years passed, radio came into the pockets. Now anyone could use radio anytime, anywhere on the go.

How radio began fizzling out

In the late 20th century, Television reached the common people. In the beginning, it was slow. The Black and White huge TV sets used to be luxury instead of need. But information, knowledge and entertainment with audio and visuals attracted the viewers and TV became popular among the people. Time passed and like radio, TV also got transformed with upgradation in the technology.

By the late 1980s, Television got colors. It was in the reach of the common people but one could survive without it.

But by the end of 20th century, when more and more channels came into existence, it became a threat to the existence of radio, as it was giving more options to the viewers as compared to the radio along with visuals. By this time everyone was gradually shifting their interest towards Television and radio started counting its days, but for some radio still holds a place in their hearts, as Television was not portable alike radio.

By mid-2000, Television became slim, yes Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) televisions were introduced which replaced the box size TV set from the living room.

By this time Television ruled the streaming business and it has become the necessity for the common man and couldn’t lead comfortably without it.

Risk for Television?

A decade ago, video sharing website YouTube came into existence. At that time, with limited reach of internet across the world, it didn’t gain much of popularity. But, with steady development in the web technology, it started gaining popularity.

In 2006, California tech giant Google acquired YouTube. YouTube enabled people around the world to post videos and watch them from anywhere.

With further tech improvements YouTube also developed. With introduction of smartphones, YouTube reached the hands of the users from their PC or laptops. Now everyone could watch any video, anytime anywhere. In other words, it can be safely said that it’s acting like a radio with visuals.

YouTube has become very easy and convenient with good HD quality, and at same time it is very cost effective, most of the people prefer to watch stuff via YouTube, at the same time with very less copyright restrictions, the broadcasters also prefer to broadcast online on YouTube.

With such emergence of online streaming with YouTube, many other free and paid streaming services such as hotstar and Netflix into existence for online streaming of short videos, movies, and even TV series, it seems like the online streaming is emerging as a threat to the giant Television.
