Date:

Gurgaon: A Gurgaon resident got the biggest shock of his life when he received an electricity bill of over Rs 75 crore.

Jitendra Kumar said he has made many rounds of the electricity board office but the issue has still not been resolved. He said the person who delivered the bill to his house also promised to rectify it, but nothing has been done yet.

“I have got a two months bill of 75 crore. Last month I got a bill of Rs 9,000 and before that my bill was five thousand. I have normal equipments at my place. I was shocked when I received my bill. 75 crore ka toh mera makaan bhi nahi hai. Hum toh sadak pe ajayenge (Even my house is not worth 75 crores, I will come on the streets if I pay this bill),” Kumar said.

Kumar has made many rounds of the electricity board office but says the issue has not been resolved yet.

“When I went to the electricity office, they said they will fix it. They asked me to wait outside the office, I waited for two hours in the office and then they said that I will receive the bill,” he added.

There have been several other instances where people in various parts of the country received electricity bills amounting to lakhs and crores of rupees.

– In June 2015, Mumbai’s Balkrishna Patil who earns approximately Rs.25000 annually received a power bill of Rs 1,04,550. The five-member family was in tizzy when they received the bill. When he went and filed a complaint, the authorities halved the amount of bill.

– In December 2014, Ashok Kumar, a resident of Ram Nagar Tohana, Fatehabad, Haryana almost fainted on receiving a power bill of Rs 17,76,00,06,775 for the months of October-November. When he approached the power department he was harassed by officials. After the media questioned the officials on the bill, it was corrected and Ashok was asked to pay the revised amount.

– In October 2014, a betel-leaf seller in Haryana received an electricity bill for the previous month with the total cost adding to a whopping Rs 132 crore!
