Georgia: In an act of defiance against his bullies, a Sikh schoolboy filmed himself facing racial abuse on a school bus in Georgia. The video has been posted on YouTube and has going viral.
Harsukh Singh recorded himself getting bullied by other children on the bus, who also called him a terrorist. The footage has been viewed almost half a million times, and sparked a conversation about bullying in school.
The video, which was shot by Harsukh himself, showed one of her female classmates shouting “terrorist, terrorist”, and another pointing an accusatory finger at him.
“Kids being racist to me,” Harsukh said to the camera.
“Quit filming us” the girl said, but the boy refused to stop the camera. “I can’t if you’re being racist to me,” he replied, before swearing at her and shouting in exasperation “who cares? I don’t care”.
Harsukh Singh is a student at the Chattahoochee Elementary School in Duluth, Georgia.
Sikhs across Northern America and Europe have been the victims of hate crimes ever since the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Several US citizens are guilty of mistaking Sikhs for Muslims due to the turban that they wear.
Sikhism is the fifth largest organised religion in the world. It was founded in the 15th century in what is now modern day India. There are currently 700,000 Sikhs in the US.
