Woman brutally raped murdered in Rohtak

Chandigarh: The brutal gang rape and murder of a mentally challenged woman in Haryana’s Rohtak has sent shockwaves across the town.

A week after the gruesome incident, civil society members and notable faces from the city joined hands with the family to take part in a candle light vigil to demand justice.

Unidentified men brutally raped and murdered a 28-year-old mentally-challenged woman from Nepal at Bahu Akbarpur in Haryana’s Rohtak district on Sunday last.

The woman’s body was found without key organs on Wednesday along with sticks, stones and condoms stuffed into her private parts, three days after she went missing.

“We want the culprits to be hanged,” said the victim’s sister at the candle light vigil. “This is not just about my sister. It’s about every daughter and daughter-in-law. But the police investigation is too slow,” she added.

Police meanwhile said investigations into the incident are progressing and the culprits will be punished soon.

“Our teams have got some crucial leads. Some local people have also provided us some clues. We are working on them in the most comprehensive way possible. We will soon arrest those responsible and ensure that they get the most stringent punishment,” Rohtak’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shashank Anand said.

Asking the government to take stern action against the accused, DCW Chairperson Barkha Sukhla Singh said, “Such incidents are happening repeatedly. Government must act and punish culprits as soon as possible.”

Social activist Annie Raja and Congress leader P C Chacko also condemned the incident.

“Highly condemnable. It shows the gap between promises being made and the work being doing. It is ironic. Haryana is where ‘Beti-padhao Beti-bachao’ andolan has recently started,” Raja said.

“I don’t want to blame anyone politically, but BJP needs to soul-search a little,” Chacko said.

Many netizens took to Twitter to vent out their anger and anguish over the horrendous incident.

Meanwhile, police have also announced a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh for information leading to the arrest of the culprits.
