Oscars biggest snubs of 2015

Date:

The New Year has begun and with it signaled the beginning of the Hollywood awards season. It is the season where Hollywood comes to a standstill to critique performances in the year that passed.

The nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards which were announced on Thursday, has once again taught us how a Golden Globe nomination (or even an award), does not mean you’re getting an Oscar nomination.

Once again, this year’s list of nominees was riddled with glaring blunders.

Ava DuVernay’s Selma actually faced the brunt of the Oscars snubs. Although it is nominated for Best Original Song and Best Picture, DuVernay failed to receive the Best Director nomination while David Oyeolowo also didn’t receive any kudos from the Academy for his portrayal of Martin Luther King Jr. This came as a huge surprise considering both of them earned major nods at the Golden Globes.

Critics points out that the Academy had the chance to nominate the first ever black woman for Best Director in its 87 year history.

Amy Adams took home a trophy for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, but didn’t receive any love from the Academy for ‘Big Eyes’. The film didn’t earn any nominations at this year’s Oscars.

Emily Blunt is in a similar boat, having received a nomination at the Globes but getting snubbed at the Oscars for her film, ‘Into the Woods’.

Although she was nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, Jennifer Aniston sadly didn’t make the cut in the category at this year’s Oscars.

Angelina Jolie was snubbed at both the Golden Globes and Oscars. The ‘Unbroken’ director didn’t receive any nominations in the best picture or best director category, but her film did earn nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. Jolie received zero nominations at the Golden Globes.

Jake Gyllenhaal earned both SAG nominations and a nod at the Golden Globes, but didn’t receive any love from Oscars, for his role in ‘Nightcrawler’, which is definitely up there with the biggest surprises.

And despite being nominated for Best Picture, Gillian Flynn’s ‘Gone Girl’ also failed to receive a nomination in Oscars for the Best Adapted Screenplay category.

Sadly, one of our favorite animated films, ‘The Lego Movie’, was completely overlooked and while we’re upset, the people behind it are more so. Although a song from the movie has been nominated for Oscars.
