Windies Cricket Board denies calling off India tour

Date:

New Delhi: Confusion surrounded the future of the West Indies’ tour of India after the West Indies Cricket Board denied the squad had been called home.

The West Indies have not called off the ongoing tour to India despite reports earlier that Sri Lanka had stepped in to take their place, the West Indies Cricket Board said on Friday.

“The West Indies Cricket Board advises, that, contrary to media reports, it has taken no decision to discontinue the ongoing tour to India,” a statement read. “The WICB will make a further statement following the conclusion of the fourth one-day international which is in progress.”

The five-match one-day international series has been overshadowed by an ongoing dispute over payments between players and the WICB and during Friday’s fourth match in Dharamsala, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that the WICB had cancelled the remainder of the tour.

Earlier, the BCCI was not happy with the way WICB has handled the situation and said the issue will be taken up in a meeting with the ICC.

“They have withdrawn their team and this (development) has come abruptly. We received an e-mail from Richie Richardson, the West Indies team manager, only this morning,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.

Before the first ODI in Kochi, the Caribbeans threatened to pull out of the series since their new contracts could see a reduction in wages up to 75%. However, the Bravo-led outfit relented just in time and went on to win the opening ODI by 124 runs.

Bravo was angry with West Indies Players Association chief Wavell Hinds. He said Hinds had “hoodwinked” them by agreeing to the new contracts without taking the players into confidence.
