Unscratchable sapphire screens for iPhone 6

Date:

Near-unscratchable screens that are expected to be one of the biggest selling points of the iPhone 6 when Apple unveils the latest model in September are to go into large-scale production in August.

Apple has a $578m (£350m) deal with manufacturer GT Advanced Technologies, which has built a plant powered by renewable energy in Mesa, Arizona, The Guardian reported.

Earlier this year, Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities mentioned the 64GB model of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 will come with a sapphire glass display. This indicates that Apple may use the Gorilla Glass 3 in the basic and cheaper 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 models much like they did with the iPhone 5S when they introduced the iPhone 5C.

Apple is spending around $700 million to ensure they’ll be stocked with enough sapphire screens for when mass production of the iPhone 6 begins.

Apple is expected to hold an event next month where the company will announce the alleged iPhone 6. The device is expected to come with an A8 processor, improved camera and Touch ID sensor, bigger battery (1810 mAh for the 4.7-inch model and 2,915 mAh for the 5.5-inch model) and should feature iOS 8 as its operating system.

The iPhone 6 may make its first public appearance on September 9, 2014.
