Two Indian officials arrested in Glasgow

Glasgow: Indian Olympic Association general secretary Rajiv Mehta and wrestling referee Virender Malik were arrested in Glasgow on Saturday on different charges.

According to reports, wrestling referee Virender Malik has been arrested for alleged sexual assault while Rajiv Mehta has been arrested for alleged drunken driving.

The two officials, however, are not part of the official 215-strong contingent which is staying in the Games village. Both of them were reportedly lodged at a local hotel.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman confirmed the arrests but refused to divulge anything more.

“On August 2, a 49-year-old man was arrested following reports of an alleged assault at City Centre of Glasgow. On August 2, a 45-year-old man was arrested following reports of an alleged assault in the west of Glasgow,” said the spokeswoman.

Asked if Malik had been arrested for alleged sexual assault, the spokeswoman said, “I cannot confirm right now.”

Reports added that the two officials will remain in police custody over the weekend, and will be produced before a Glasgow magistrate on Monday.

India is currently fifth in the medals tally of the Commonwealth Games.
