Uttarakhand: Pilgrimage to Kedarnath was suspended on Wednesday for three days after the MeT department warned of heavy rains, which could lead to blockage of roads to the shrine.
Another reason for suspension of the pilgrimage is that both motor roads and the 21-km trek route from Sonprayag to Kedarnath is frequently blocked following showers.
About 200 pilgrims, who had gone to the Himalayan shrine to pay obeisance, are being gradually brought down. 35 of them have already reached Sonprayag and the rest will also follow late this afternoon, Langar said.
The town suffered extensive destruction during June 2013 from flash floods caused by torrential rains in Uttarakhand state.
Kedarnath is located at a distance of 223Â km from Rishikesh in Uttarakhand and close to the source of Mandakini river at a height of 3,583Â m (11,755Â ft) above sea level. Behind the town and Kedarnath temple, stands the majestic heights of Kedarnath peak 6,940Â m (22,769Â ft), Kedar Dome 6,831Â m (22,411Â ft) and other peaks of the range.
