New Delhi: The Supreme Court has refused to stay the appointment of Lt-Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next Army Chief after a petition was filed by Lt-Gen Ravi Dastane challenging the appointment of Gen Suhag as the next Army Chief.
The previous UPA government had cleared the name of Lt-Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag as the next Army Chief days before the election results were announced. The decision was taken in the last Cabinet meeting of the UPA government.
The 59-year-old Suhag, a Gurkha officer, is currently the Vice-Chief of Army Staff and the senior-most among the Lieutenant-Generals. He will have a tenure of 30 months as the Chief of the force when he takes over from Gen Bikram Singh who retires on July 31.
Even though the BJP opposed the UPA government’s decision, it standing by the appointment of Suhag and criticised its own minister Gen (Retired) V K Singh in the process.
Gen V K Singh, as Army Chief, had put a ‘Disciplinary and Vigilance’ ban on Suhag when he was the 3 Corps Commander two years back. The ban, which prohibits a promotion, was lifted immediately after Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh took over on May 31, 2012.
