5 out of 10 global cities that attract tech talent are in India

New Delhi: You may be surprised to know Gurgaon ranks among the top 10 global cities that attract most of the tech talent. India’s Silicon Valley Bangalore topped the list, followed by Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai, scooping up the top four spots in the LinkedIn ranking.

According to the study, 45% of new residents in Bangalore had tech skills, followed by 43 per cent each for Pune and Chennai. In comparison, the number was 31 per cent for San Francisco Bay Area, the highest among global cities.

“This is indicative of more people are moving to big cities than ever before, and the Indian technology sector is experiencing explosive growth,” Sohan Murthy, a research consultant at LinkedIn, wrote in a blog post.
 

Half of the top 10 global cities that attracted significant proportions of tech talent in the past year are in India. The size of the India’s information technology and business process management industry is estimated at $118 billion. Besides that many multinational technology companies have a large presence in India.

For the 52 global cities LinkedIn looked at, the median percentage of new residents with tech skills was 16 per cent or just under 1 in 6.

Other cities that found a place in the list include Seattle, Austin, Melbourne and Sydney.

LinkedIn conducted the study by collecting information from over 30 crore member profiles and identified several cities across the globe that attracted significant proportions of tech talent in 2013.

According to LinkedIn, the three most popular categories of skills among the new residents with a technology background were IT infrastructure and systems management, Java development and web programming.
