Campa Cola residents relent

Mumbai: Campa Cola Housing Society residents have allowed civic officials to enter the premises on Monday and disconnect electricity, water and gas pipeline connections. The decision was made on the third visit of officials of the Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to the illegal flats on Sunday.

Earlier, the residents appealed to President Pranab Mukherjee to save their homes. According to reports, residents in their mercy petition urged Mukherjee to intervene on “humanitarian grounds”.

The municipal body on Sunday had given another ultimatum to evict the Campa Cola Housing Society residents. The officials gave 30 minutes’ time to residents to discuss decide their future course of action.

The residents may be evicted on Monday. The civic body warned they may use force, stating earlier on Sunday, “This is law. Even mercy petition can’t be of any use. Please cooperate with us. Otherwise, we will use force. I am telling you. You are running away from the truth. There is no other option,” Deputy Municipal Commissioner Anand Waghralkar said.
