Chennai medicos meet Health Minister

Date:

Chennai: Representatives of postgraduate medical students from the city’s three medical colleges met Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar and Secretary J Radhakrishnan on Wednesday. The meeting, a student said, was to ask for a hike in their stipend, an issue over which the students have been agitating for several weeks now.

“We have been given an assurance that a proposal for a reasonable hike in our stipend is under consideration and a decision on this will be taken soon,” one of the representatives said.

A senior health department official said a decision on this would be taken at the highest level.

On Tuesday, about 100 postgraduate medical students formed a human chain in front of Government Stanley Medical College, demanding an increase in their stipend. At present, these students receive Rs 17,400, which they said is simply not enough, adding that their counterparts in almost all other States were paid more than them.
