Sonia Gandhi elected Chairperson

Date:

New Delhi: The Congress Parliamentary Party on Saturday elected Sonia Gandhi as its Chairperson. Addressing the meeting, Sonia Gandhi said, “This has been a fiercely contested elections. Lakhs of Congress workers have worked hard in the last few months and I am thankful to them. I am pained and deeply pained, but we have to introspect – both individually and collectively.”

“It will be my endeavour to strengthen the Congress,” she added. She also praised Manmohan Singh for providing wise, sober and dignified leadership for a decade.

This is the first parliamentary party meeting of the Congress after its debacle in the Lok Sabha election, where it could win only 44 seats. The low tally has raised questions whether Congress will get the Leader of Opposition post after failing to win the requisite number of 55 seats.

While some Congress leaders, including Digvijaya Singh and Veerappa Moily, want Rahul Gandhi to take up the role of the Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, sources say the party vice-president himself is not too keen on it.

Instead, sources said, senior party leader Kamal Nath is likely to be nominated as the leader of the Congress in the Lower House. The job could either be handed over to A K Antony or Ghulam Nabi Azad in the Rajya Sabha.
