Population boom and technological advancements have taken a serious toll on our biophysical environment and so we need to do our part in reversing the effects of degradation in order for humanity to continue living in a habitable and sustainable environment. The 3 Rs –Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle – are still as relevant as ever.
Here are 10 simple ways that we can integrate into our daily routines to help protect and preserve our world:
- Join as many tree planting trips as you can.
- When going shopping, make it a habit to bring your own eco-bags.
- Create a compost heap in your garden, or use a compost bin. This helps recycle food waste and other biodegradable materials.
- When possible, try to carpool going to school, work, events. Try and reduce the number of trips you make using your car.
- Reduce emissions from cars, by walking or cycling. These are not just great alternatives to driving, they are also great exercises.
- Use public transport, when you can, for everyday travel.
- Send your drinking bottles, paper, oil waste, old batteries and used tires to a garage for recycling or safe disposal; all these can cause serious pollution.
- Do not pour chemicals and waste oil on the ground or in bodies of water.
- Separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste when disposing.
- Avoid unnecessary or wasteful use of plastics.
